St. Luke Institute’s student in Kabacan dies of hazing

KABACAN, North Cotabato—A student of St. Luke Institute’s, Kabacan, North Cotabato died of hazing on the night of October 18. The victim was identified as Bobong Bualan, 26 years old, and a 1st year student taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

The victim is a resident of Port, Barangay Poblacion, Pikit, North Cotabato but was boarding at Plang Village II, USM Compound, Kabacan, North Cotabato while studying in Kabacan.

Bualan is a neophyte applying for membership in the “Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity” also known as Treskellion.

An informant-student from the same institute who requested anonymity said: “Rigorous initiations were conducted by the fraternity at Matalam St., this municipality. Thereafter, the victim suffered serious physical injuries on many parts of his body.”

The student also said that, “The victim and certain Leo Terante went to another boarding house at corner Aglipay and Bonifacio Sts., Kabacan, North Cotabato where he collapsed. He was brought to the Kabacan Medical Specialist Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.”

As of press time, no one admitted responsibility to the hazing that caused the death of the student. However, it is widely known that a chapter of the fraternity at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) was the group that recruited the victim.

The Kabacan Police station is still investigating surrounding circumstances on the fatal hazing.
